Balance.

Working a day job and having a side hustle is great until it isn't. It can't be all work, no play. There's four key areas of life. Work/vocation is only one of those areas. There needs to be a balance.

Welcome to the Walk You Through It blog where I, Rob Stanish, walk you through overcoming the challenges that arise in life. If you are a listener of the Walk You Through It podcast you'll know I speak directly to those who want to turn their side hustle into their main gig. If you're a reader of this blog, you know that here I try to touch more on the personal side of life rather than business. This is one of those topics that intersects between both life and business.

“I've learned that you can't have everything and do everything at the same time.” - Oprah Winfrey

I've learned this lesson the hard way. You don't have to. I'm going to save you the work but explaining how I create balance in my own life and together we can walk through creating balance in your own life.

What does it mean to have balance?

Let's talk about the four key areas in life. These areas can be broken down into more specific areas but for now we'll just focus on these four main areas:

  1. Work/Vocation

  2. Relationships

  3. Health

  4. Time/Money Freedom

Chances are that things may going well in one or two of these areas and not so well in the remaining areas. Which areas are going well for you? Which areas could use improvement? Write it down.

Having balance mean that everything is going to be 100% in each of these key areas. Having balance means that you're not completely ignoring an area or two... or three and solely focused on one. Trust me, I've been there and done that, and it's not pretty.

Having balance means that even though certain key areas may be more important to you than others at this time in your life, you're still taking time to work on these other areas.

How do you create balance?

It starts with being honest with yourself and being willing to look at your life with a critical eye. It's time to evaluate your life. Look at each area and evaluate how you are doing in each area. Write it down. What's working in each area? What's not working? What's going right? And what's not going so right? Which area are you mostly focused on currently? What would you like to improve? What are willing to improve? And what's one thing you could do to improve that area of your life?

Once you've begun to get a grasp on which areas need attention, create a plan for improving those areas. Schedule some time with your family for your relationship. Take a walk for your health. You could even take a walk with your significant other and knock out two birds with one stone: health and relationships. Schedule time to work on your hobbies or side hustle for your work/vocation. Start tracking your spending for your time/money freedom. These are just a few examples. You don't need to come up with some extravagant plan with these huge changes that you probably wont follow through on. Just make small adjustments. It's the small things that add up and make the biggest changes.

And get to work, yes work. It's going to be challenging to focus on areas that you've been ignoring and still remaining focused on the other areas too. If you were doing well in your vocation and time/money but lacking in your relationships and health, don't do a complete 180° and ignore your job and finances to improve your health and relationships. Balance means slowly making changes that improve all areas of your life. It's difficult to do and it's constant work but if you put in that work, your efforts will pay off.
