We all have a lion inside... a lion, a warrior, a giant, an empowering identity that lives within us. And we have the choice to adopt that more empowering identity.
This is the Walk You Through It Blog where I take you with me on a journey through things I've struggled with and together we walk through how to overcome them and move forward.
“Identity is this incredible invisible force that controls your whole life. It's invisible, like gravity is invisible, but it controls your whole life” - Tony Robbins
This is part two of a two part post on identity. Part one can be found here!
A new, empowering identity
First, we need to decide what that new and empowering identity is… how do we decide that? Well I have an exercise that I feel works really well with identifying your new empowering identity.
EXERCISE:
Close your eyes and imagine yourself living the life of your dreams. Really see your future self. Who would you have to be? What would this new you be doing? How would he/she act? What kind of person would you need to become to be able to accomplish your goals and be living the your dream life?
Answer those questions and you’ll find your empowering identity. Write it down. Write "I'm the type of person that... (fill in the blank.)
ADOPT IT
Okay, now that we have our new empowering identity how do we adopt it?
Let’s take a step back and figure out what our disempowering/limiting identity has been. This goes back to the first question I asked you in part one of this two part post on identity.
Who are you?
Answer this. Up until now, my disempowering identity has been? And my new more empowering identity is? Again, write it down. We're not going to get any worthwhile results unless we take the time to write these things down.
***Exercises that will help you adopt the new identity
Verbally externalize your new empowering identity.
Say it to yourself “I’m the type of person that…”
Say it to others
This will hold you accountable. You’ll want to live up to how you present yourself to others. Every time you find yourself not acting accordingly to your new identity or describing yourself with the old limiting identity, I want you to use this as an opportunity to practice what is called a habit-loop trigger.
Habit-loop trigger: When the old belief pops up and you realize it. Take a moment to say your new identity.
For example, if you believe you’re a weak person(old identity) and that thought pops up, I want you to stop and verbalize the new more empowering identity (I’m the type of person that can handle anything that comes my way. I’m stronger than I ever knew.)
