Solutions, not problems.

Here's what to do when you have a problem.

This is the Walk You Through It Blog where I take you with me on a journey through things I've struggled with and together we walk through how to overcome them and move forward.

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” - Albert Einstein

It doesn't matter who we are, we're all faced with problems. Here's how I handle a problem.

What's the problem?

The first thing you'll want to do is define the problem. Grab that notebook and pen of yours, sit down, and get ready to put in some work. Write out what the problem is.

Break the problem down.

Now, you want to break the problem down into smaller issues. When we first write down our problem we can see it as one giant mess but if we take the time to look at it we can see that it consists of many smaller issues. Issues that can be dealt with much more easily. See if you can list each smaller problem within the larger original problem. This will make it easily to come up with solutions later on.

Now shift gears.

We cannot solve problems with the same level of thinking that created the problem in the first place. This means we need to shift our focus from the problem to the solution. The only result you'll get from focusing on the problem itself is make it bigger. Energy flows to where our attention goes. So shift gears from what's wrong to how you can make it right.

Go through the list.

Now it is time to look at your list. It's time to write down possible solutions for each of the smaller issues within the original problem. How many solutions can you come up with? Write them all and later, we'll evaluate which solution will work best. Find at least one solution for each issue.

TIP: Try to get creative with your solutions. Write down solutions even if they seem absurd or crazy.

Evaluate.

Now, go through your list of solutions and pick which one seems right for each issue. Once you've narrowed your list down to a single solutions for a single issue then you're ready to move on.

Implement and Adjust.

Start where it makes sense to start. Pick a solution and work on implementing it. Usually, I start with the easiest one to accomplish. This will build momentum and allow you to move through your list with ease.

If you happen to realize that one of your solutions wont actually work to fix your issue then it is time to adjust your solution. Don't think of this as a failure. Think of it as your getting closer to what you want because you are. You haven't failed... you've just figured out what won't work. When you find out what doesn't work, that brings you closer to what will.
