The Power of Focus

Energy flows where attention goes. That's why it's up to us to be intentional about what we are focusing on.

This is the Walk You Through It Blog where I take you with me on a journey through things I've struggled with and together we walk through how to overcome them and move forward.

What you focus on, grows.

Let's face it. We all have 24 hours in a day. The difference between a rich man and a poor man isn't a matter of time. The difference is what each man chooses to focus on. I've said this many times before: We don't have a choice as to if we spend time or not, but we do get to choose how we spend that time.

Our time, energy, and resources are spent on the things we choose to focus on. Therefor, what we focus on expands. If you were to spend the next month steadily focusing on your health, I bet that you would see a dramatic increase in your health by the end of next month.

The more that I've focused on my coaching business, the bigger it has become. I've been focusing specifically on this blog and my podcast. I'm releasing two podcasts and one blog post per week. I'm still working with clients and on other projects but my main focus for my business is in these two areas. As a result, they've grown.

What are you focusing on?

Are you focusing on things that you want to expand or things that you wish would appear less in your life? I admit that my natural tendency is to focus on what's not going well. Our brain's are literally wired to seek out the negative: whether that's something that's going poorly, something that's a potential danger, or something that is displeasing to us. It's our brain's attempt to keep us alive.

It's up to you to decide whether your continued focus on the negative is helpful and moving you towards your goals or whether its detrimental and blocking you from achieving those goals. Yes, it's helpful initially but if we are thinking long term then focusing on the negative will only create more of it.

When you recognize that your focus isn't directed on something that you wish to grow then it's time to shift your focus.

Things that help with directing your focus.

Having an aim. Goals will help keep you focused on what's important to you. If you don't have a list of goals I suggest you get to writing that list.

Track how you spend your time. The simple act of tracking your time will show you what you are currently focusing on. Take a week and a notebook and keep track of how you spend your days.

Pay attention to how you feel. Our emotions are here to guide us. They tell us what we are focusing on. You'll feel good if your focused on something positive and bad if you're focused on something negative.

Set an intention. I'm stealing this one from Tom Bilyue... "I only do and believe that which moves me towards my goals." An intention to only do and believe the things that will move us towards our goals is a powerful way to achieve those goals. Set an intention to focus on what matters to you.
