What is failure? Are you a failure? Are you afraid of failing? And is your fear of failing stopping you from getting what you want? Read and find out.
This is the Walk You Through It Blog where I take you with me on a journey through things I've struggled with and together we walk through how to overcome them and move forward.
“I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” - Thomas A. Edison
What is failure?
Failure is a lack of success as defined by the dictionary. The second part of the definition is the omission of expected or required action.
Are you a failure?
Do you see yourself as a failure? Is that who you are? If failure is a lack of success or an omission of required action then isn't failure an action? Are you an action or are you a human being?
Failure doesn't describe a person. A failure is something that occurs. It doesn't define you. It's not part of who you are. You can experience failure but just because you experience something, it doesn't mean that it becomes you.
Are you afraid of failing?
I can't answer that for you but it would be wise to take some time to think about it. What are you afraid of? If you have something you desire and you're holding back from going after it then it's time to ask yourself why. The fear of failure stops most people before they even get started. The fear of failure is driven by the need for security and safety. But the safe person never truly lives.
The fear of failure can disguise itself. It takes many forms: Excuses why you can't do something, reasons why it won't work, being too busy to make time for what really matters, perfectionism, and more. How is the fear of failure showing up in your life?
True failure.
Do you want to know what true failure is? I'll get there but first we'll take a look at what isn't true failure.
True failure isn't a setback. Life is a process. Yes, there will be a time when things go right and a time when things go wrong. And yes, you will fail at times too but that isn't true failure. That isn't the ultimate failure. That's just life. That's part of the process. Things don't goes as planned. A mistake is made. A game is lost. You get fired. That's not failure. That's an obstacle on your way to success.
I'll tell you what the ultimate failure is. It's never going after what you want... out of fear that you'll fail. It's never starting. It's giving up. You're afraid of failure? Good, that means you're human. If you choose to allow that fear to consume you then you're almost guaranteeing failure.
Think about it. The need for security drives a person to play it safe so they won't fail and ultimately they never succeed through a lack of trying. That's a life not lived. That's the ultimate failure.
