What the FUNK?!

A Four Step Guide to Figuring Out What The FUNK is Wrong and Overcoming It.

There is nothing wrong except for EVERYTHING. - ME.

Can you relate?

This is the Walk You Through It Blog where I take you with me on a journey through things I've struggled with and together we walk through how to overcome them and move forward.

WHAT the Funk?

So what is a funk? It is not quite depression but can feel like it. It's one of those days where everything sucks. You don't feel like doing anything and not doing anything makes you feel worse. It's a negative cycle filled with negative emotions.

How do I battle it?

You don't. We are NOT going to fight the funk. Trust me, the more you fight it, the worse you'll feel. So if we aren't going to fight it then what are we going to do?

STEP 1: Recognize & Accept

The first thing you need to do is recognize where you are at and I don't mean physically. Recognize where you are mentally and spiritually. If you need help with this, then here: You're in a funk. Okay, now accept it. Be okay with being in a funk. Accept that you are in the state of being that you're in. And don't just accept it, lean into it. Take responsibility for it. So if you feel like you're being lazy then lean into that shit and have a lazy day. Don't feel guilty about it. Own it.

STEP 2: Visualize

Once you've accepted where you are, it is time to visualize where you'd rather be. Think about tomorrow. How do you want to show up tomorrow? What do you want to get done?

Let's plan out tomorrow. I want you to set 3 - 5 goals. They do not have to be huge goals. Your first goal could (and should) be to make the bed first thing in the morning. Don't just plan in your head. Write your goals down in a place that you can see them. Personally, I like to write mine on my whiteboard but you can use a pen and a piece of paper and tape your list somewhere you'll see it tomorrow when you wake.

The key here isn't to plan out every minute of the day... it's to plan out 3 to 5 things that would move you towards your goals. If you don't have goals, then start here. It's a starting point for creating purpose in your life.

STEP 3: Reset

That's all were doing today. We aren't going to try and force ourselves to do anything on our list today. The only thing we're going to focus on right now is getting a good night's rest because when we sleep, we reset.

Think about it. When we wake up each morning, it's literally a new day. It's a new page in your story and you can write the book of your life the way you'd like it to be. A new day means new choices and new decisions. So get some rest and when you wake move onto step 4.

STEP 4: Action

It's a new day and you have the opportunity to be a new you. Take action. The reason why I suggested making your bed as the first goal of the day is because it starts your day off right. It's a super simple goal that sets you up for success throughout the day.

As you complete your goals, make sure to check them off your list! This is super important because it releases reward chemicals in your brain that will motivate you to keep going. You can even celebrate a little after accomplishing each goal!

Remember, just because you wrote 5 goals doesn't mean you need to get all 5 accomplished. The object isn't to get everything done. The aim is to make progress towards your goals and become better than you were the day before.

And remember, don't fight the funk.
